Hats & capsHead measurements and hat size conversions
Hat size relates to the circumference around the inside of the hat’s headband.
On smaller screens, swipe across the table to see all columns.
| Size | Head (cm) | Head (inches) | UK | US / Canada |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 55 | 21½ | 6¾ | 6⅞ |
| Medium | 57 | 22¼ | 7 | 7⅛ |
| Large | 59 | 23 | 7¼ | 7⅜ |
| XL | 61 | 23⅞ | 7½ | 7⅝ |

How to measure your head
- Wrap a soft tape measure around your head where the hat will sit: approximately 1cm above your ears, slightly lower at the back.
- Keep the tape comfortable, rather than tight. Most hat headbands have little or no stretch.
- Read the circumference where the tape meets. If you’re between sizes, choose the larger size.
No tape measure? Use string, mark where it meets, then measure it against a ruler.

How to measure your chest
- Wear a thin T-shirt or measure bare-chested. Stand naturally with your arms relaxed.
- Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, just under your armpits and across your shoulder blades.
- Keep it level, snug but not tight. Breathe normally and record the measurement in inches or centimetres. Measure again to check.
Some brands have a slimmer mod fit. Check the brand’s guide and product description if you prefer more room.
Comparing with a jacket you own
Fasten a well-fitting jacket and lay it flat. Measure across the front from armpit to armpit, then double that measurement. For example, 19 inches across gives a garment chest circumference of 38 inches. This is the garment measurement, not your body chest size: it includes room to move, so compare it only with garment measurements supplied for the product.
Formal shirt collar sizes

| Collar (inches) | Collar (cm) | Size |

| 18–18½ | 46–47 | XXL |
| 19–19½ | 48–49 | XXXL |
To measure your collar, place the tape around the fullest part of your neck. Allow two fingers between the tape and your neck for comfort, then round up to the next half inch. Exact fits vary by brand.

Men’s Trousers, Jeans & FlaresWaist sizes, inside leg lengths and measuring advice
Trouser sizes are given in waist sizes (W) followed by leg length (L). For example, a size such as 32W 30L means a 32-inch waist and a 30-inch inside leg.
Occasionally sizes are given with the waist size followed by a letter to indicate the length. For example, a size such as 36S means a 36-inch waist with a short leg. S = Short, R = Regular and L = Long. Check the description for the actual inside leg length; sizing can vary by style.

How to measure your waist
- For most styles, measure where the waistband sits on your body. Check the style description for the rise.
- Stand relaxed and wrap the tape around that point. Keep it snug but not tight, allowing a finger under the tape.
- Record the measurement in inches and compare it with the product’s size guide.
You can also compare with trousers you own. Choose a similar style that fits you well. Fasten them, lay them flat and measure the waistband without stretching it. Double the flat width to get the garment’s waist circumference.

| Label | Inches | Centimetres |
|---|---|---|
| Short | 30 | 76 |
| Regular | 32 | 81 |
| Long | 34 | 86 |
| Extra long | 36 | 91 |
Most styles are stocked in up to three leg lengths. Extra long is included here as a conversion reference. Some styles use 29, 31 and 33 inches for short, regular and long and some styles are a graded length; check the product’s description.
How to measure your inside leg
- Lay a pair of trousers with your preferred leg length flat.
- Measure along the inside leg from the crotch seam to the hem.
- Alternatively, have someone measure down your inner leg from the crotch to where you want the hem to finish.
Men’s suits & tailoringJacket sizes, lengths and suit size conversions
General suit conversions & jacket lengths
A UK jacket size such as 40 refers to the chest size in inches. European sizes use a different numbering system: for example, UK 40 is approximately EU 50. S, R and L refer to jacket length, where available.
Suit trousers are often around 6 inches smaller at the waist than the jacket chest size: for example, a UK 40 jacket with 34-inch waist trousers. Check the actual sizes supplied for the suit.

How to measure
Use a soft tape measure over close-fitting clothing or underwear. Keep it level and snug without pulling it tight. A mirror or someone to help can make this easier.
- Bust: with arms relaxed, measure around the fullest part of your bust.
- Waist: measure around your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button.
- Hips: stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
- Compare all three measurements with the brand’s size guide, or use the general body measurements above as a starting point.
